Conditioning for Martial Arts is a rigorous conditioning class emphasizing conditioning training for Taekwondo, Judo or other martial arts. The class can be used as a conditioning foundation for any sport. A participant is expected to be in reasonable shape in order to benefit fully from this class.

This class grew out of elite national and international level training for Taekwondo and Judo at UM in the 1980s. The approach is to condense high level workouts into an efficient use of time, and yet avoid the kind of stress on joints that conventional methods of conditioning often create in later years.

Wear: shorts/sweat pants; T-shirt with sweatshirt pullover; good tennis shoes.

Class comments:

"I have never been in as good a shape as when I got done with this course."-- Sophmore

"The stairs. I told a friend I was taking the course. He had taken the course two years ago. He asked, "are you guys still doing -- the Stairs? We both laughed. Those stairs are a bonding experience ... for the survivors ...".

"This is the class I looked forward to every day; that's why I took it two Spring semesters in a row." -- Graduate student

"This was a hard class -- the effective exercises really condense the workout."  -- Senior

"The instructor obviously understands how to train an athlete. I have never felt so clearly improved physically in so many respects in such a short period of time." -- Senior

"I wish this course went the entire semester." -- Junior

"I've never had a PE course where the instructor does all the workouts with the students. That kept me going." -- Sophomore

"This was quite an eye-opener for me. These people know how to work hard. The instructor really knows this stuff. I was pretty active in high school sports, but this was a new level for me." -- Freshman
